I hadn’t exactly covered myself in glory when pretending to be a journalist, so I planned to use a different cover story for my visit to Washbridge Studios. I was going to pretend to be the lead singer of a band, looking for a studio where we could record our next album.

Washbridge Studios were located in a modern building on a small industrial estate just off the main Washbridge to West Chipping road. The woman behind reception looked familiar, but I couldn’t place her.

“Jill, it is you, isn’t it?”

“Err, yeah.”

“How are you?”

“Fine, thanks.”

“How long has it been?”

“I—err—”

“It must be at least five years. More even.”

“I guess so.”

“What brings you here?”

“I have an appointment with Roger Tunes.”

“You do?” She checked her computer. “I don’t see anything.”

“I booked it under my stage name.”

“Vicky Voss?”

“That’s it.”

“I always said you should have joined us.”

Us? Who was us?

“We split up you know.”

“You did?”

“Pity really. The usual story. Artistic differences.”

“Of course.”

“Things might have been different if you’d taken up our offer to be the The.”

It all came flooding back to me. Brenda had been a member of the sensation that was The Coven. Famous, amongst other things, for their routine where they went down on one knee, and then jumped up, announcing: We. Are. The. Coven. I’d been invited to join them and become the The, but I’d declined. Not long afterwards, Brenda had struck out on her own under the name ‘We’. As a solo artist, she’d really hit the big time. The last time I’d seen her was when Jack, Kathy, Peter and I had seen her in concert.

“How come you’re working here, Brenda?”

“My management turned out to be scumbags. I had no idea what I was doing when I signed with them. By the time I realised what was going on, it was too late, and I was left with nothing.”

“But you were so talented. Couldn’t you have started again?”

“Probably, but the whole affair left me totally jaded. Maybe I’ll go back to it one day.”

“How did you end up here?”

“I knew Roger Tunes from the time when we recorded our album here. He heard what had happened and offered me this job. But enough about me, tell me what you’re up to.”

“I—err—”

Just then, a tall, bald man with a goatee walked into reception.

“Vicky? I’m sorry if I’ve kept you waiting. I’m Roger Tunes.”

“It’s okay. I’ve only just arrived.”

“Why don’t I show you around?”

“That would be great.”

“See you later, Jill,” Brenda said.

“See you.”

“Do you know Brenda?” Roger asked.

“Yeah. We go way back.”

“Did she call you Jill?”

“Yeah, Vicky is my stage name.”

“Of course. How do you know Brenda, if you don’t mind my asking?”

“Not at all. She once invited me to join The Coven.”

“It’s so sad what happened to them.” He opened a door and gestured for me to lead the way inside. “This is our main studio. We do have another, smaller one, but that’s being upgraded at the moment. What do you think of it?”

I looked around slowly, pretending to study the equipment.
